Drunken driver leads bus into ditch; excavator saves it before falling
Rajakkad (Idukki): A bus of Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation nearly fell into a ditch as its driver was drunk. Watching the bus fall into the gutter, an excavator operator acted on time and rescued the passengers by holding the falling bus with the machine for about an hour.
Santhanpara police took bus driver Karthikeyan into custody for his dangerous driving. There were about 80 passengers in the bus during the incident that took place on Thursday at 4.30 pm. It is reported that the bus was plying on the Bodinayakkanur-Rajakkad route and was being driven carelessly since the journey began.
Though the passengers requested the driver to drive the bus slowly, he ignored them. When the bus was moving close to the right side of highway at Erachipara near Thondimala, it lost control and started falling into the ditch.
Ratheesh, the operator of an excavator that was engaged in highway maintenance works, happened to notice the accident and quickly held the bus from falling with the machine’s backhoe holder. The passengers alighted from the bus in the meantime.
Ratheesh operated the machine until the bus was removed from the dangerous state. The passengers said that the bus had hit two jeeps by the time it reached Erachipara.
