Daily wage worker turns high school teacher, aims to crack Civil Service
Kumily: 'Stop studying' and 'get married' were the kind of advice that revolved around Selvamari. But she didn’t listen to those. She struggled a lot in her life, worked in cardamom plantations during holidays, and spent all night studying. This hard work and determination have led the 28-year-old to become a high school teacher at Vanchivayal School in Idukki district.
Her father abandoned her family including her mother and two sisters during her childhood. Selvamari started her fight for survival from her two-room house in Chottupara. Her mother Selvam worked hard to look after her three daughters. She worked in cardamom plantations as a daily wage worker. Selvamari could not bear to see her mother suffer alone. Hence, she also started to work with her mother during holidays. Since then, she was focused on completing her education and pursuing a career.
After completing her schooling at Murikkadi School, and Chottupara GLP, she studied Plus Two in Tamil Nadu. Later, she joined Thiruvananthapuram Govt. Women's College for graduation. Mathematics was her main subject. During her college days, she faced difficulty with Malayalam, which was the medium of education. Neither her English was any better.
“When I started to feel isolated, I thought about quitting. Then I remembered the face of my mother who was suffering in Elamalakkad. That moment alone was enough to continue my studies,” she said.
But slowly and steadily she worked hard and solved her language problem. She completed her degree and also obtained her M.Sc. from University College. She then pursued B.Ed from MG University centre in Kumily and passed her M.Ed and M.Phil with the first rank from Thycaud Govt. College of Teacher Education in Thiruvananthapuram.
She is currently pursuing a PhD in Mathematics. Selvamari also cleared the UGC NET exam.
Initially, she was named on Kerala PSC’s women civil police officer rank list. However, she opted out of it because of her lack of interest in it. In 2017 she cleared the PSC exam for the high school teacher. Even though she received the appointment letter in 2020, she joined the service a few days ago. However, her biggest dream is to pursue a career in civil service and she is ready to fight for it.
