Baby Asiya born in 6th month with ailing heart, recovers; celebrates 1st b'day
Kochi: Asiya Mehrin was born prematurely with a growth of only six months. She weighed only 550 grams and her survival chance was very low. Fortunately, the efforts made by the doctors in pediatric department of Ernakulam Medical College and the cardiology department of Ernakulam Lisie Hospital, gave her back safe and sound to her parents.
Asiya was born to Adimali Irumbupalam natives Muhammed and Fousiya as the long awaited baby girl after two boys. She was born in a private hospital in Thodupuzha. The doctors had predicted that she would not survive. Her parents visited Dr. Peter Vazhayil, the neonatologist and hospital superintendent of Ernakulam Medical College. It was he who detected the heart ailment of the infant and suggested an emergency surgery. Dr. Peter referred them to Dr. Thomas Mathew, the cardiologist in Lisie Hospital. By the time, the baby’s weight went down to 500 grams.
The surgery was successfully completed by Dr. Thomas Mathew along with Dr. Edwin Francis, Dr. C. Subramanian, Dr. Annu Jose and Dr. V. Bijesh. The Lisie Hospital authorities performed the surgery free of cost, considering Muhammed’s financial difficulties. The infant was brought back to the medical college the same day. As she had some difficulties during night, the doctors of Lisie hospital arrived in the night itself and took care of the baby.
Later, Dr. Somasekhara Pillai, Dr. Peter Vazhayil and Dr. Sindhu Thomas continued the treatment and helped the baby recover. Asiya had to spend about one month in the ventilator. Finally, she returned home 4 months and 11 days after birth. When she came to the hospital on her first birthday, she weighed more than 5 kg. The Director of Lisie Hospital Fr. Ajo Moothedan, Medical College Vice Principal Dr. R. Jayasree, Dr. Peter Vazhayil, Dr. Edwin Francis attended the birthday celebration.
