At 71, woman gives birth to baby girl through IVF
Kochi: In a rare incident, a woman gave birth to a baby at the age of 71. Kayamkulam Ramapuram native Sudharma took the tough decision in order to get relief from deep pain. Sudharma and her husband Surendran lost their only son Sujith (35) one and a half years ago. Sujith was working in Saudi Arabia. The family was heartbroken after his death.
After some time, Sudharma decided to have another child despite her age. Surendran also supported his wife’s decision. When the elderly couple approached the doctors for in vitro fertilization (IVF), they discouraged them. The doctors repeated that it is very risky to bear a child at this age. But Sudharma was firm on her decision.
Thus Dr Lalithambika Karunakaran, head of gynaecology department at Alappuzha medical college, and team took the baby out through caesarean surgery at 32 weeks of pregnancy on March 18 this year. The baby girl weighed only 1100 grams at the time of birth. With this, she was admitted to neonatal ICU. After the baby’s weight increased to 1350 grams, she was sent home with parents.
Dr Jayaram Shankar, Dr Mary Praveen, Dr Sreelatha, Dr Latha Babukutty, Dr Viby Mary and Dr Nanda Chandran of Alappuzha medical college were excited to witness a miraculous child birth. Sudharma also is happy as the baby was born safely. She would name the little one Sreelakshmi.
