At 70, physically challenged farmer Kumbhamma is busy learning letters
Vellamunda (Wayanad): Kumbhamma, who fought with her disabilities and dedicated herself to farming, is now busy learning letters. She could not complete even primary education as her legs were paralysed at a very young age. She received many recognitions including Mathrubhumi She News Award.
Kumbhamma drags herself into her vegetable garden and looks after the plants regularly. Now she is trying hard to learn Malayalam in the third phase of the Literacy Mission.
Her instructor K Krishnapriya is also determined to teach Kumbhamma. Another woman named Kumbhamma, who is also her neighbour and relative, joins her in this mission.
In the third phase of Literacy Mission, 1263 people were identified as illiterate in Vellamunda panchayat. Among them, 826 enrolled in the Literacy Mission classes. 40 study centres were prepared for this.
40 instructors are taking classes abiding by the Covid protocols. They get a salary of Rs 3000 per month. The classes are being conducted actively with full support of the panchayat.
