Annie’s advanced fish selling through WhatsApp
Thrissur: Annie is a native of Laloor and a widow who sells fish along with her son for their livelihood. The thing that makes her business unique is the involvement of social media to sell fish. She sells fish in a goods autorickshaw on the roadside at the Ayyanthole Civil Lane junction.
Her WhatsApp business goes like this.
Annie receives a WhatsApp message from Santhosh.
It reads, “Can I get 3kg ayakoora (king mackerel)? Small size not an issue.”
She replies “Will try”
After 2 pm, Santhosh received a WhatsApp message with an image of ayakoora displayed at Chettuva sea shore from Annie. “Is it enough?”
Santhosh: “How much?”
Annie: “Rs 650 per kg.”
Santhosh: “Fine, buy them. I will reach by 6 pm. Cut them into pieces to fry.” Santhosh fixed the business.
Annie (60) is not a business magnet who sells fish through social media but a simple and local woman who sell fish on the road side in the evening to earn her daily bread with her son.
Annie selected social media for her business by chance. Her son who sells fish for 10 years is hearing impaired. Owing to that arguments with customers regarding price is common. When asked the price of choora (tuna), he would say the price of kora (salmon).
It was two years back Annie started helping her son in business. She collected the phone number of the customers. She would ring up and convey the day’s special fish in the stall and its price to the customers. Subsequently, she upgraded to WhatsApp group.
Annie buys fish from shores along with her son. She shares the image and price of the fish in the WhatsApp group. The customers can drop a message in the group which fish they intend to buy. From 4pm to 8pm, Annie and her son Anu will be available at the Ayyanthole Civil lane junction.
The fish ordered will be kept cleaned and packed by the time. Their business has a name, “Civil Lane Fresh Fish.” As the name denotes, fish is fresh.
Every day they buy only 60 kg fish. The complete stock will be sold out. Price is same for all and fish is available for those who don’t book in advance too.
