Alumni of Kerala Varma College gifts Shabana a motorized wheel chair
Thrissur: Shabana, a physically challenged student of Thrissur Sree Kerala Varma College, got a gift all the way from London. The NRI Alumni Association of the college has gifted Shabana with a motorized wheel chair, knowing her difficulties to reach the college from Malappuram every day. The London-based Malayali Association, which includes the 1988-90 batch of pre-degree students of the college, sponsored the motorized wheel chair that costs about Rs 1.25 lakh.
Malappuram Munduparambu Shabana’s lower half of the body was paralyzed from birth. Her father Salim brings her to college travelling 6 hours every day. Madhu Chembakassery, who presently lives in London, and his friends noticed the story of the daughter and father published in Mathrubhumi. They contacted Deepa Nisanth, the teacher of Malayalam department in the college and initiated the fund raising programme to help Shabana.
They handed over the motorized wheel chair to Shabana in a programme organized in the college on Tuesday. College principal C. M. Latha, college union chairman Sanjay Krishna, general secretary Adithyan, Shabana’s father Salim also attended the programme.
Shabana is a student of first year BA politics. Since there is no room with attached bathroom or wheel chair ramp in the college hostel, she cannot stay in the hostel. Two students have come forward to stay with Shabana. Her teachers and classmates are in search of an affordable house for rent near the college.
