A poet who writes for abandoned ones
Thrissur: The life of Saraswathy Amma is interesting like a fable. She is a poet and one of her poems got placed in the text book of third standard students. But nobody realised the poet when she reached the school after listening to her poem titiled 'Oru Prarthana' recited by the children.
Saraswathy Amma, a resident of Puranattukkara in Thrissur has an interesting reason while selling her own poetry books. With her poems, she earns money to feed the deserted people.
At the age of 69, she writes poems and sells her books in schools. She is giving food to over 50 people who are abandoned in the city since 10 years.
Saraswathy Amma who was born in Kottarakkara and brought up in Cherthala lives in Thrissur for the past 4 years. She cooks food and packs it for the poor abandoned ones every Sunday.
She distributes food for the people, including beggars at Sakthan bus stand, Puthanpally, Latin Catholic Church and Municipal Bus Stand in Thrissur.
She has three daughters and two of them are residing in Thrissur. She chose to live alone to create a private space for her poetry writing.
She has published five books of her poems. Popular Malayalam writer Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai had written the preface for her book titled ‘Irumbazhikal’ released in 1989.
Saraswathy Amma who failed in 10th standard has a good number of fans who love her poems.
Her five books with CD of her poems recited by noted singer Vaikkam Vijayalakshmi got the best sale. Writer MK Sanu has given an introduction to poems in the CD.
She has been travelling across Kerala to sell her books and CD. Her upcoming work ‘Theruvinte Makan’ will be released soon.
