A community fridge at Chennai beach that feeds the hungry
Chennai: A community refrigerator installed near Elliot's Beach in Chennai’s Besant Nagar is a unique concept to feed the hungry. Those who are hungry can just take food from the fridge without asking anyone.
Not just that, anyone can keep food in it for the needy.
The concept implemented by Dr Issa Fathima Jasmine, an orthodontist by profession, has helped to reduce the number of people starving in the streets of Chennai.
Anyone can keep food in this fridge either cooked at home or brought from restaurant. Whoever want food can take it from here, none will question them.
According to Issa, a large amount of food go waste in our community. "We are actually capable of feeding double our population. But we are not actually bothered about this. We waste a lot," she said.
Here, one is to only bring the excess food cooked at home that is usually thrown into dustbin, she added.
Not only food, a shelf installed near the fridge allows people to keep anything from books to clothes to toys. The same concept, the needy can take it for free.
This concept is winning hearts and more and more people from children to homemakers are actively involving in this venture that comes as a boon to the underprivileged.
