Haripad (Alappuzha): 96-year-old Karthyayani Amma, the oldest literacy champion in Kerala, has been selected as the Commonwealth of Learning Goodwill Ambassador which includes 53 countries. Commonwealth of Learning intends to campaign for distance education in the member countries.
Muttam native Karthyayani Amma had scored 98 percent marks and bagged first rank in the Aksharalaksham literacy examination conducted by Kerala State Literacy Mission. Earlier, Commonwealth of Learning vice president Balasubramanian visited Karthyayani Amma and understood her learning methods and collected some photographs as well.
He had said that the story of Karthyayani Amma’s achievement will be featured in the journals published in various countries. Balasubramanian returned after presenting her with a gift on behalf of the Commonwealth. Following this, she was selected as the goodwill ambassador.
The Aksharalaksham examination is conducted ahead of the fourth standard equivalency examination. Now Karthyayani Amma is preparing for this exam and she is determined to appear for the seventh and tenth standard equivalency examinations also.
