Thamarassery (Kozhikode): The hardships of the long journey to Sabarimala never stops 80-year-old Amrita Das Thambi from walking on foot to the hill shrine. This is the 21st time in a row he visits the temple travelling 450 km on foot.
After filling the Irumudikkettu from Chamal Karappatta Bhagavati temple, Thambi set out to Sabarimala on Saturday. Maruthilavu native Sajith and his nephew 10-year-old Kannan also will accompany him this time to Sabarimala.
Thambi and team will be taking the route through Areekode-Pattambi-Guruvayur. They walk 30-35 km every day and take rest in temples on the way. They travel only during day time. On the 14th day, they will reach Sannidhanam on Makaravilakku day.
Thambi’s first journey to Sabarimala was by foot from Chamal as a Kanniswamy (first-time pilgrim) 21 years ago and has never failed to go for the annual pilgrimage afterwards.
Thambi has served as the patron of Thamarassery Ayyappa Bhajana Math and vice president of Karappatta Bhagavati temple. Also he is the chief priest of Maruthilavu Ayyappa temple and Adivaram Kanaladu Bhagavati temple.
