43 days on ventilator, Titus defeats Covid
Kollam: The treatment lasted for over 72 days; 43 days on ventilator and 20 days the patient was lying unconscious. Yet Sasthamkotta native Titus (52) defeated Covid and recovered completely.
It was a challenge for the health officials of the Parippally Government Medical College hospital when Titus was admitted with respiratory problems added to kidney ailments besides being infected with Covid. The medical college had to spend Rs 32 lakh to bring Titus back to life.
Titus, a fisherman residing at Pallisserikkal, tested Covid positive on July 6 and was admitted to the Parippally govt hospital the same day itself. After admission to the hospital, he was put on ventilator support as he developed complications within half an hour.
Doctors from different specialty departments discussed Titus condition for further treatment. His internal organs suffered badly due to Covid infection and his kidney problems too worsened. Dialysis was done on Titus 30 times when he was on ventilator itself. As he had to undergo dialysis continuously, a dialysis machine was installed inside the ICU spending Rs 6 lakh. Titus returned to life almost 7 times from his moribund stage.
Titus tested negative for Covid on July 15 but continued to remain in hospital due to severe health issues. Though he was removed from ventilator on August 17, his mobility and speech was impaired. Physiotherapy was given and he emerged back to normal.
Titus was discharged from hospital on Friday. He thanked the hospital staff, doctors and nurses. Titus wife, 2 daughters and 13 others in his house tested positive for the virus but all have recovered.
