33 ration shops in Kasaragod to have e-PoS machines
Kasaragod: The electronic Point of Sale (e-PoS) machines aimed to bring transparency in Public Distribution System (PDS) will be installed in 33 ration shops in the district. Distribution of ration items through e-PoS will begin from Tuesday.
It is being implemented as part of executing food security act across the country.
In the initial phase, the machines will be installed at 33 ration shops in Kasaragod municipality, Chemmanad and Mogral Puthur grama panchayats.
“e-PoS machines will help customers avail ration items on fixed quantity and rate,” said district civil supplies officer N Jnanaprakash.
Aadhaar-based e-PoS machine will use biometric identification to make sure that ration card holders get their allotted share of food items. Either the card holder or family member listed in the card should make the purchase after verification of biometric details through the machine.
In order to make use of the machine, the card holder should link the mobile phone number with aadhaar.
Meanwhile, it is not mandatory to link mobile phone number with aadhaar in the initial phase. The machine will generate a bill in the name of the card holder after every purchase.
E-PoS machines will be linked with the electronic weighing machines in the near future. It will benefit the customer to receive the allotted share of food items.
For example, if 5 kilo of rice is allotted to a card holder, the ration shop dealer cannot decrease the quantity. If he takes 4900 gram of rice on the weighing machine instead of five kilo, the bill would not be generated. Thus the civil supplies can prevent pilferage of ration items and upgrade the efficiency of PDS.
The district civil supplies department has organised a training programme on the use of machines to 33 ration shop dealers at the collectorate on Monday. E-PoS machines were also distributed at the event.
