‘Ruchimudra’ - First hotel by transgenders in Kerala to start in Kochi soon
Kochi: A group of transgenders have started a hotel in Ernakulam chasing their dreams. ‘Ruchimudra’ hotel is the dream project of Aditi Achuth, Saya Mathew, Preethi Alexander, Pranav, Ragaranjini and Meenakshi. They started the venture with the help of Ernakulam district panchayat and this is the first hotel started by transgender persons in Kerala.
The finishing works of the hotel is progressing at the building near Kasaba police station in Kacheripady. Hotel ‘Ruchimudra’ will be following traditional cuisine using only organic vegetables, fish and meat and self-prepared spices. Two of the masters of the hotel have the experience of working with larger hotels before revealing their gender identity.
Mudra Charitable Society which works for the welfare of gender minorities gives full support to the hotel started by transgender entrepreneurs. Ernakulam district panchayat approved their project and provided Rs 10 lakh for the construction of the hotel. Also, the social justice department supported the venture.
The four-storeyed building was taken for rent from a private individual paying Rs 70,000 a month. In addition to the hotel, an office for transgenders, shelter home, counselling and Yoga centres also are being constructed in the building. The shelter home will be run by the social justice department on contract basis.
Aditi, one of the owners of the hotel, said that the major aim of ‘Ruchimudra’ is to change the negative attitude of the society towards transgenders. In order to reduce expenses, the entrepreneurs themselves took up the works like painting the hotel.
The amount allotted by the district panchayat was sufficient only to complete construction works. Aditi added that the inauguration of the hotel will be decided after considering the convenience of district panchayat authorities.
