Women in coastal areas still willing to sell their kidneys: Reports
Alappuzha: The women in the coastal areas are sill ready to sell their kidneys, it is reported. They are waiting for the surgery after completing their medical checkups and procedures. But one moved back due to confusion in the price offered for the organ.
The mediator had initially offered Rs 15 lakhs for the kidney but later reduced it to Rs 10 lakhs. The mediator who hails from Kozhikode is under surveillance. His mobile phone has been switched off.
A special team under the Crime Branch SP will be leading the investigation into the organ trade racket. A total of 21 people have donated their kidneys from two wards in Ambalapuzha South panchayat according to the records from April 28, 2018, to February 2, 2021.
The major challenge before the investigation team is that the donors have not filed any complaint. One of the donors said that she has financial issues at home and is voluntarily selling her organ.
The mediator used to give Rs 1000 and food for the women whenever they go for checkups before the surgery. According to the reports of the Crime Branch, the mediator exploited them by collecting huge amount of money from the organ recipient and giving only a fixed price to the donor.
Since there are similar reports from other districts as well, the state Crime Branch has also initiated the probe.
