Woman dupes housewives in Kochi pretending as Godwoman
Kochi: A huge scam over faith was uncovered at Maradu here on Friday. A woman who introduced herself as ‘Amma’ and her assistant Sheeba Xavier cheated many housewives convincing them with a miracle in their life. It is reported that the accused looted Rs 40 lakh and gold from the women who visited them seeking solution to their problems.
A woman pledged her house and handed over Rs 10 lakh to the accused. After receiving the money, the woman who pretended as a miracle worker or godwoman gave an idol convincing the woman that it is made of 50 sovereign gold. As an ultimate solution to the financial problems, the woman approached a goldsmith to sell the so-called idol in gold. But the goldsmith declared the idol as fake.
In another incident, a native of Vyttila got trapped by the gang as she was worried about her differently-abled son. She contacted the fraud gang after her neighbour convinced her that there is an ‘Amma’ in Pala who got powers to cure all ailments. She also told her that the ‘Amma’ cured her cancer.
The woman who introduced herself as ‘Amma’ took gold jewellery from the devotee after convincing her that it is needed for the offerings. The gang looted over 27 sovereign gold and Rs 5 lakh from the Vyttila native.
Though the gang returned the gold, the woman found it fake in further examination.
Three housewives have lodged a complaint against ‘Amma’. They noted that apart from women, many men also got trapped by the fraud gang.
Police have been probing whether the fraudsters are backed by any huge criminal racket.
