Uthra murder case: Suraj’s statement out, confesses divorce demand as motive
Kollam: The demand for divorce by Uthras’ family was the motive behind the murder, confessed Suraj, accused in the snakebite murder case in Kollam. The confession statement of Suraj, husband of murdered woman Uthra, has been out. He also confessed to exploiting Uthra mentally and physically.
In January 2020, Uthra’s family demanded divorce after Suraj’s mental and financial oppression became unbearable. They reached Suraj’s house in Adoor to take Uthra back to her house. However, Suraj convinced them and reached a compromise. Following this, he started plotting the murder.
Suraj feared that, once divorced, the dowry he received will have to be returned. He calculated that, if Uthra is killed and the child is living with him, he would be able to get more money from the family.
On the day of the murder, Suraj had made juice for everyone in Uthra’s family. Though he gave it to Uthra, her parents and brother, he didn’t consume it. Hence police suspect that some drug might have been mixed in the juice given to Uthra for sedation. This might be the reason that Uthra didn’t wake up after snakebite. This can be confirmed only when the forensic examination results of Uthra’s internal organs are obtained, police said.
