Teak smuggling accused attacks forest officials in Idukki
Adimali: Two forest officials including a woman were injured after an accused in a teak smuggling case attacked them at Neryamangalam forest range here the other day. According to reports, the forest officials were attacked after they took action against the person on charges of smuggling teak.
Neryamangalam Nagarampara forest station official Neethu Pradeep and Valara forest station official MS Abhijith suffered injuries in the attack.
Oonukkal police arrested Neryamangalam native Surendran (35) on a complaint by the forest officials.
Surendran and his team smuggled teak wood from Kanjiraveli teak plantation on October 17. Following this, the forest officials got information that Surendran used this smuggled wood for the construction of his new house. Based on this, the forest officials arrested Surendran.
The officials seized the vehicle and load from the spot. Amidst this, Surendran attacked the officials. On Thursday night, Police arrested the accused and the court remanded him on Friday.
He was booked for a similar case in July. Surendran who was an excise official was terminated from service following disciplinary action.
