Snakebite death of Kollam woman: Husband, snake catcher arrested
Kollam: In connection with the death of a young woman, Uthra, due to snakebite, in Anchal here, her husband and an accomplice have been arrested.
Uthra’s husband Sooraj and his friend, a snake catcher, who supplied the snake, Kalluvathukkal native Suresh have been arrested on Sunday, informed Kollam Rural SP Harisankar.
In February, Sooraj procured a viper from Suresh and tried to kill Uthra (25) using the snake at his house in Adoor on March 2. However, Uthra escaped the snakebite and was discharged from hospital on April 22. She returned to her house in Anchal.
On April 24, Sooraj bought a cobra from Suresh and stored it in a plastic container inside a bag under their cot at Uthra's house in Anchal.
On May 6 night, Sooraj took out the snake and threw it on Uthra. Sitting on the bed, Sooraj waited and watched until the snake bit Uthra twice. Then he tried to put the snake back into the container, but failed.
Later on May 7 morning, when Uthra’s mother came and tried to wake her, she didn’t respond. Uthra’s mother, brother and Sooraj rushed her to hospital where the death was confirmed due to snakebite.
On further search, the snake was found hiding under an almirah inside the room and was killed, the SP said.
The investigating officer also said that the police are trying to submit the charge sheet within 90 days.
Sooraj was not happy about his life with Uthra. Financial gains were the motive behind the murder. Sooraj had taken around 98 sovereigns of gold from Uthra’s family as dowry. He had planned to abandon Uthra for a better life, the police officer added.
