Kollam: Police slapped a senior citizen for riding pillion on a bike without wearing a helmet.
Chadayamangalam Probational SI Shajeem hit 69-year-old Ramanandan Nair on his face and dragged him to the police jeep. The incident took place on Wednesday morning.
Chadayamangalam native Ramanandan Nair and his friend were going to their workplace on a bike when the police stopped them. Both Ramanandan and his friend, who was driving the bike, were not wearing helmets. Following this, police asked them to pay a fine of Rs 1,000.
They told the police that they had no money as they were going to work. However, SI Shajeem did not let them go. Though they requested the officials to allow them to pay the fine at the station later, the SI refused. Following this, both of them were dragged into the police jeep.
The man who was driving the bike was first dragged into the jeep. Then the police tried to take Ramanandan into the jeep, but he refused to get in. He told the police that he was riding pillion and should not be held. Following this, the SI slapped him and dragged him to the vehicle.
Mathrubhumi News aired the visuals of the incident. Other police officers responded that the SI should not have behaved so rudely over a matter of paying a fine. After the visuals came to light, Kollam Rural SP has ordered for a probe into the incident.
