Sexual harassment: Priest who escaped from police net nabbed
Puthoor: A priest who was on the run in a sexual abuse case was nabbed by the police on Tuesday. The priest went absconding from Puthoor Kollam and was held in Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
Kannur native Father Thomas Parekala (30) who had reached the Thevalapuram Pullamala seminary for teaching had sexually harassed 3 students of the seminary and a case was booked against him. Father Thomas Parekala is the Vicar of Kollam Puthoor St Mary’s church and the incident happened in July 2016. The accused will be brought to the Kottarakara Rural SP office for interrogation.
What the police say about the incident:
Fr Thomas serves as Vicar of Moozikode St Mary’s Church and Pullamala Holy Cross Church and belongs to the SDM convent headquartered in Chennai. He was associated with a seminary in Pullamala and was a faculty there. The father was sexually assaulting the children who were doing their studies in the seminary. A 14-year-old victim, native of Karinkulam Poovar, who discontinued his studies from the seminary, filed a complaint with the CI of Poovar. In the complaint, he had stated that 3 others too were harassed by the Father.
A team led by the CI reached Pullamala and nabbed the priest. When he was being brought to Moozhikode for the proceedings, he ran away when the mehsar was being prepared. There were allegations that no formalities were followed when the accused was taken to the station and the lapse on the police resulted in the escape of the priest.
The FIR prepared by the Poovar CI was handed over to the Puthoor Police. Interrogation of many persons associated with the priest are going on.
