Rs 3.5 cr worth gold seized from Karipur airport
Kozhikode: Gold worth Rs 3.5 crore was seized from five passengers in Karipur airport. Rs 2.95 crore gold was seized from four passengers arrived from Dubai and Rs 55 lakh worth gold from another passenger landed from Dubai.
The five passengers tried to smuggle 4.8 kilograms of gold and 3 kilograms of gold compound. Checking was intensified at Karipur airport on the basis of the secret information given by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
The passengers were nabbed during the raid by Customs Air Intelligence unit. 2.99 kilograms of gold was hidden inside the battery of a rechargeable fan. The gold bars were painted in silver colour too. Kannur native Aftab who carried this was arrested and remanded.
Kozhikode Parakkadavu native Ajmal was caught while trying to smuggle 1983 grams of gold in the battery of emergency lamp. Kannur Koothuparamba native Nisamuddeen and Kozhikode Mukkam native P Mujeeb Rahman were smuggling gold compound hiding it in their body.
In a raid carried out by Customs Preventive wing, Rs 55 lakh worth gold was seized from a Malappuram native man who was hiding it in his underwear and socks. This is the largest gold raid carried out in Karipur airport in the recent times.
