Rs 15 lakh worth opium brought for new year celebration seized from Palakkad
Palakkad: A man has been nabbed from Manjakkulam area of Palakkad district along with illegal drugs brought for New Year celebrations. The person was identified as Tamil Nadu Tirupur native Hakeem. The excise officials seized 750 grams of opium worth Rs 15 lakh from him.
The man was arrested by Palakkad excise special squad CI and team following a raid based on the secret information received by Deputy Excise Commissioner V. P. Sulesh Kumar. The excise team have been discreetly observing the drug smugglers for the past three months.
Hakeem was arrested while he was transporting opium in a two wheeler after smuggling it from North India to Coimbatore. The officers also took the two wheeler into custody. The opium is sold for Rs 3000-4000 per gram.
It is reported that the opium is smuggled here in view of the DJ parties held in connection with the Christmas – New Year celebrations in Kozhikode and Kochi. As per the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, possession of more than 25 grams of opium is a criminal offence that can invite upto 10 years of imprisonment.
