Punalur: Pathanapuram Excise Range authorities nabbed two people in two separate incidents, one for driving around in a scooter selling ganja and the other for selling alcohol in an autorickshaw. The authorities also nabbed three other people for selling alcohol on a dry day.
Kollam Perinad native Shihabudeen (28) was arrested for selling ganja while Pathirikal native Ayub (47) was arrested for selling alcohol. Punnala native Ravindran (62) and Mancode natives Tulsidharan (53) and Ibrahimkutti (62) were also arrested for selling alcohol on May 1.
The authorities confiscated 2 kilograms of ganja and seized the scooter used by Shihabudeen. The 40 liters of alcohol and the autorickshaw used to sell it was taken from Ayub. From the people who sold alcohol on dry day, the authorities confiscated half a liter of alcohol and the scooter that was used to sell it. Ayub’s accomplice fled away and Shihabudeen, who tried to escape by harming the Excise officers, was brought in by force.
Shihabudeen was caught in a vehicle inspection in Kunnikkodu. Excise officers said he is presently on bail in a case relating to narcotics. Officers have also informed that Shihabudeen usually purchases ganja from Tamil Nadu, sends it to Punalur via train and then on a scooter, takes it to Kollam. Kundara, Elampalloor and Karicode are the areas where he distributes the ganja.
Ayub had been caught for selling alcohol in Karvoor and Chebanaruvi. He was found with alcohol from the beverages outlet. An individual is only allowed to purchase 3 liters of alcohol at a time. Excise officers wonder how is it possible for this man to possess 40 liters.
The 5 were held in an investigation led by inspector Benny George. The investigation team includes Preventive Officer Y. Shihabudeen, Santosh Varghese, Rajesh and shadow team members – Shaji, Anil Kumar, Vishnu, Saritha, Manu, Sreenath and Ashwanth.
