Plotted gold smuggling with film stars; contacted Dharmajan, Shamna Kasim; says accused
Kochi: In another twist to the investigation into the diplomatic baggage gold smuggling case, one of the accused revealed about the bid to smuggle gold with the help of film stars. Hamjath Ali, who is under the custody of Customs, tried to use film stars for gold smuggling.
Hamjath in his statement revealed that he contacted actor Dharmajan Bolgatty and actress Shamna Kasim to discuss on gold smuggling. Hence, the customs will probe on the links of the film stars in the case.
The gold smuggling racket tried to smuggle gold from Dubai with the help of people in the film industry. With this aim, they have approached many stars who used to travel to Dubai for stage shows, revealed the statement of the accused.
The accused also tried to use the vehicles of the film fraternity to take smuggled gold safely from the airport to its destination. Huge remuneration was offered to the stars and others.
It is hinted that accused who are booked for blackmailing Shamna Kasim are also involved in gold smuggling. Hamjath had contacted many stars introducing himself as Anwar Ali.
The probe team has recovered the laptop which was used to make fake documents in the gold smuggling case. It was recovered from the raid carried out at the residence of accused Sarith’s friend at Thiruvallam.
It is learned that this laptop was used to make fake government documents including customs. It was found that the accused had made fake seals and letter pads of some offices. In order to identify the source of these documents, the customs raided Sarith’s house at Thiruvallam. But the officials failed to recover the laptop from here.
During the interrogation, Sarith confessed that he had handed over the laptop to his friend. Following this, customs raided his friend’s house and recovered the laptop.
Customs will probe into the involvement of Sarith’s friend in the case. At the same time, his friend in his statement to the probe team revealed he was just keeping the laptop as directed by Sarith.
Two more arrested
Customs officials arrested two Malappuram-based jewellery owners in connection with the gold smuggling case. Kottilangadi natives Aboobacker (60) and Abdul Hameed (54) were arrested.
A special court in Ernakulam remanded the duo for 14 days.
