Kochi: Kochi shadow police have nabbed a group of five men who played cards with money, to level the financial loss caused due to the two-day general strike. The group played cards with loaned money to earn their usual daily wages. Those nabbed by police were identified as Radhakrishnan (53), Sunil Kumar (42), Nikhil (28), Sudheesh (36) and Sathishan (44), all natives of Ernakulam. An amount of Rs 31,000 was found from them.
In the custody of police, the justification they gave police was odd. Due to hartals and strikes, they had no work and incurred financial loss. They further shared a story of miseries due to shutdowns. The financial loss due to the unavailability of work encouraged them to play cards with money borrowed on interest.
On hartal days, such card games are held. Gangs that loan money with interest to such card playing groups are active in the area. Police have collected details of them.
Shadow police nabbed the group of players from a hidden space near Chettichira beverages upon a tip-off. Crime detachment ACP Biji George said that those taken into custody were not involved in any cases previously and are from economically poor conditions.
