Patients create ruckus at COVID centre in Kollam after bid to smuggle in tobacco products fail
Kollam: Patients at a COVID treatment centre created a ruckus after health workers foiled their bid to smuggle in tobacco products and liquor by hiding them inside food parcels.
The incident took place at a COVID First-Line Treatment Centre in Adichanallur here on Sunday.
It is reported that patients tried to smuggle in tobacco products and liquor along with food brought from outside. But the health department staff who examined the food packets found it. Tobacco products were hidden inside bananas. It is reported that several bottles of liquor were also recovered.
Following this, the staff informed that food from outside will not be permitted inside the treatment centre.
On hearing this, some of the patients came out of their rooms and created a ruckus. They abused the staff using expletives and threatened to spread the virus. It is reported that the verbal abuse lasted for hours.
As the incident triggered a controversy, the district authority banned food from outside at COVID treatment centres. The district authority is planning to establish special CFLTCs for treating people who are addicted to drugs and are suffering from psychological problems.
