Palathayi case: Probe team finds evidence against BJP leader in POCSO case
Kannur: In a turning point in Palathayi child abuse case, the investigating officers received evidence proving that accused Kuniyil Padmarajan, a teacher and BJP local leader, raped the 9-year-old girl.
The class 4 girl had stated that she was sexually abused by Padmarajan inside the school toilet and she had bleeding. On the basis of this statement, the tiles in the toilet and the soil were subjected to forensic examination.
Following this, they found bloodstains on the tiles. Other scientific examinations also were carried out as part of the investigation. The probe team will submit the charge sheet in Thalassery POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court soon.
The police received the complaint on sexual abuse in January 2020. First, Panoor police investigated the case. The accused absconded after a probe was initiated. Widespread criticism had arisen against the police for the delay in arresting him.
Though Padmarajan was arrested later, the police said that the crime did not take place and the girl was giving contradictory statements. After this, a special team led by IG S Sreejith investigated the case. But they also claimed that the girl was lying.
Meanwhile, a phone call received by IG Sreejith led to controversies and the girl's family approached the high court. With this, the case was handed over to a third probe team led by IG EJ Jayaraj. Two women IPS officers are also part of the team.
The new team recorded a detailed statement of the girl and carried out an elaborate investigation. Following scientific examination, they found out that the girl was subjected to sexual abuse.
