No liquor available amid lockdown; 3 commit suicide in state
Kannur/Kochi/Kollam: In separate incidents, three people committed suicide due to non-availability of liquor amid lockdown declared in the state. Suresh (38) son of deceased Velu Achari of Perumbuzha near Kundara in Kollam, K C Vijil (28) a native of Anjarakandi in Kannur and Vasu (37) a native of Kaitharam near Kochi committed suicide on Saturday.
Suresh was staying with grandmother Thankamma. Around 4 am, when she went outside the house, he locked the door from inside and hanged himself. Suresh was unmarried and a cancer patient. His friends stated that he was suffering from severe stress as liquor was not available. Krishnakumari is his mother.
At the same time, Vigil was a loading-unloading labourer. He was found hanging around 10 am inside the house. He was the son of P Rajan and mother Vilasini and has a brother Shijil. They told police that Vigil was seen mentally stressed as liquor was not available.
Vasu, who was also unmarried, was staying with his mother. He committed suicide by hanging around 4.30 pm inside the house. Relative said that he was showing severe withdrawal symptoms for the past two days. Natives also told police that he committed suicide because of the mental stress developed from unavailability of liquor.
Paravoor police broke open the door and took the body outside. It was shifted to taluk hospital for post-mortem.
