Some of the injury marks on the body were days old. The doctors had suspected sexual abuse when the body was brought to the hospital.
The girl child belonging to the family from Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu was staying at a rented house in Kumbazha Kalleekkalpadi and was killed on Monday. The child’s body had injury marks from beating and cut marks from knife. Police arrested the child's stepfather Alex (23) in connection with the incident.
According to police, the child’s mother had gone for work in neighbour’s house at 8.30 am on Monday. When she returned by 2 pm, Alex was lying in the room in an inebriated state. The child was lying near him. When the mother asked Alex what happened, he beat her up. The mother then informed neighbours and took the child to Pathanamthitta general hospital. By then the child had died.
The accused had escaped from custody at around 12 am on Tuesday. He ran away with the handcuffs when police took him outside the station to toilet. He was later nabbed from his house by the locals and was handed over to police. He again tried to escape and attacked the police while being transported to police station.
Alex confessed that he has been sexually abusing the child for months. Police are facing difficulty in questioning Alex as he is a drug addict. Drugs were seized from him. The mother of the child was also questioned.
Charges of murder, POCSO Act and Juvenile Justice Act have been registered against Alex.
