Murder of 5-yr-old in Pathanamthitta: locals nab accused who escaped from police custody
Pathanamthitta: The accused in the murder case of a 5-year-old in the district, who had escaped from police custody, has been nabbed by the locals. The accused identified as Alex had escaped from custody at around 12 am on Tuesday. He ran away with the handcuffs when police took him outside the station to go to toilet.
The search for Alex continued for several hours. Alex was then nabbed from his house by the locals and was handed over to police. He again tried to escape and attacked the police while being transported to police station.
The girl child belonging to the family from Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu staying at a rented house in Kumbazha Kalleekkalpadi was killed on Monday. The child’s body had injury marks from being beaten up and cut from knife. Police arrested the child's stepfather Alex (23) in connection with the incident.
According to police, the child’s mother had gone for work in neighbour’s house at 8.30 am on Monday. When she returned by 2 pm, Alex was lying in the room in an inebriated state. The child was lying near him. When the mother asked Alex on what happened, he beat her up. The mother then informed neighbours and took the child to Pathanamthitta general hospital. By then the child had died.
Police said that the child’s body had many injury marks. It is yet to be confirmed whether the child was sexually abused. The postmortem will be carried out on Tuesday at the medical college in Kottayam.
