Pathanamthitta: Adopter and the mediator in an illegal adoption attempt were arrested after the mother changed her mind on giving away her child. The two men arrested by police were identified as Krishnankutty, a native of Adoor and Amir Khan, a native of Pandalam. The action was taken based on the report submitted by a Child Protection Officer in Pathanamthitta.
Krishnankutty and wife had approached the pregnant woman to adopt her child after delivery through Amir Khan, the mediator in the deal. The woman’s husband had abandoned her earlier. The couple moved the pregnant woman to a rented house after making an agreement. In the agreement it was cited that the couple would meet the expenditure of the woman during pregnancy and delivery and the woman will hand over the child to the couple after delivery.
At the time of delivery, the woman was admitted at the hospital in the name of Krishnankutty’s wife. Following that, the birth certificate of the child carried the name of Krishnankutty and wife as parents.
However, the incident came to light when the woman refused to hand over the child to the couple after delivery.
Following that, woman launched a complaint with the Child Welfare Committee. Pathanamthitta Child Protection Officer investigated the incident and reported the matter to district police chief. Based on the report, Adoor police registered a case against Krishnankutty and Amir Khan and arrested the duo. Both were remanded later.
Minister KK Shailaja responded that strict action will be taken in the incident.
According to the Child Protection Act, illegal adoption of children can fetch upto 3 years of imprisonment and Rs 1 lakh as penalty.
