Kochi: A man who smuggles ganja by taking free rides in stranger’s vehicles was finally nabbed from Kochi the other day after he took a free ride in excise special squad vehicle.
In the bizarre incident, Ernakulam excise special squad nabbed Alappuzha native Mahin (19) and seized 1.25 kg ganja from him.
In the wake of Lok Sabha elections, police and excise are carrying out strict surveillance and inspections on road. The young man found this strange idea to smuggle ganja in stranger’s vehicle to surmounting the police and excise.
But, turning all his expectations upside down, this time Mahin got a free ride in a vehicle assigned for the special surveillance by excise shadow team. As he got into the vehicle, the special shadow team member who was driving the vehicle got the smell of ganja. He then stopped the vehicle lying something went wrong with the vehicle. Soon, he informed the matter to special squad team members who were patrolling the area and nabbed him.
Mahin is a cook in a private hotel in the city. He smuggles ganja to his native place and distribute it to the retail sellers there when he goes home on Saturdays. He admitted that he had smuggled ganja several times. The officials said that the investigation to find the source of ganja and other people involved into this is progressing.
In the new tactic of smuggling ganja in stranger’s bike by hitchhiking, people who carry the banned drug hang it to the carrier of bikes when police stop the vehicle for inspections. If police find the drug, smugglers will deny the ownership blaming it on the man who gave him lift and will escape from police.
