Man, paramour arrested for murdering woman
Kochi: Police arrested a man and his lover for murdering his wife at Udayamperoor here in Ernakulam district on Tuesday.
The arrested were identified as Premkumar and Sunitha Baby, a nursing superintendent while the deceased was identified as Vidhya. The extra marital relationship and methods used to evade capture were inspired by movies.
Premkumar and Vidhya had been staying at a rented house in Udayamperoor. Premkumar and Sunitha were batch-mates in college. They met after a long time during an alumni meet in college and started a relationship after taking inspiration from the movie ‘96’.
After Sunitha came to his life, Premkumar was waiting for a chance to eliminate Vidhya. Premkumar took advantage of a neck injury Vidhya had sustained in an accident earlier.
The murder took place on September 20. Premkumar took Vidhya to Thiruvananthapuram on the pretext of obtaining ayurvedic treatment for her neck injury. Sunitha had rented a villa at Peyad for the purpose.
Premkumar took Vidhya to the villa and served her alcohol mixed with sleeping tablets. Once Vidhya passed out, Premkumar strangled her to death. Later, he and Sunitha took Vidhya’s body to Thirunelveli in Tamil Nadu in a vehicle. They abandoned the body in an isolated area near the national highway.
The duo then returned to Kochi and Premkumar field a complaint with Udayamperoor police stating that Vidhya was missing. He also cooperated with the investigation.
The murder was well planned. While taking Vidhya to Thiruvananthapuram, Premkumar had abandoned her mobile phone inside the Netravathi Express to mislead the investigation. This act was inspired by the movie ‘Drishyam’.
When police started investigating the missing case, Vidhya’s phone was traced to Mangaluru. But investigations in this regard did not bear fruit. Meanwhile, the Thirunelveli police, who had recovered Vidhya’s body buried it as an unidentified corpse.
Following this, police again summoned Premkumar for questioning but this time he did not cooperate with the officials. He then raised allegations against investigating officers and sought an anticipatory bail.
This raised suspicion and police started investigating regarding Premkumar. They came to know that he was staying with Sunitha at a rented house in Thripunithura. Police took the two into custody and they confessed to the murder.
