Man gets 12 years’ jail, Rs 10 lakh penalty for acid attack in Kannur
Thalassery: Additional District Sessions Court here sentenced a man for 12 years’ imprisonment and Rs 10 lakh fine for attacking a woman with acid.
The guilty has been identified as James Antony (49), a native of Pilathara. Failure to pay to the fine amount can attract three more years in prison. If the amount is paid, it will be given to the victim woman.
The incident took place on December 24, 2015. Rincy (29), a native of Pariyaram was attacked by James while the woman was going to church for the Christmas eve mass along with her children. James who appeared before the woman in the costume of Santa Claus poured acid on Rincy’s face.
In the case, prosecution tried 27 witnesses. James' grudge against Rincy led to the attack with an intention to disfigure the face of the woman.
Woman who appeared at the court wearing a mask was identified through scientific tests. The attack disfigured the face and damaged the eye sight of the woman. Her son also sustained burn injuries on neck and back.
Earlier, the woman had moved high court to speed up the trial. Based on the plea, high court directed the sessions court to complete the trial within eight months. According to the high court direction, this Saturday was the last day for the verdict in the case.
