Man catches crocodile while fishing; ends up in jail
Mettupalayam: A Sirumugai native was arrested by forest officers while skinning a crocodile. Sirumugai Periyoor native Rajan aka Pazhaniswami (50) was nabbed by the forest officials. However, his companion Mariyappan (60) from Periyoor ran away.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon in Sirumugai forest range. Pazhaniswami had gone for illegal fishing at Thottappallam near the Bhavanisagar dam. A baby crocodile weighing around 3 kg was trapped in the net.
Both took the crocodile in a sack to the Sirumugai forest office area. They had planned to consume crocodile meat.
Meanwhile, the neighbours suspecting something fishy, informed forest officers. A team under forester Satyarajan chased and nabbed the culprits.
The offence charged against them could fetch up to seven years in jail.
Ranger Manoharan said they are in search of Mariyappan. The fishing at Bhavanisagar dam had been contracted. There are many crocodiles in the dam.
