Chalakkudy: Police on Tuesday arrested a man, who cheated a woman for financial gains after promising to marry her. The convict was identified as Prathish (25), a native of Angamali. A special investigation team headed by DySP C R Santhosh arrested him.
Prathish got to know about the Amballur native woman, who is a nurse in Saudi Arabia, through a matrimonial advertisement. They became close through phone calls and later social media. Prathish made the woman believe that he was working in Sydney and had an Australian citizenship. He also lied to the woman that his father an astronomer in NASA and his two sisters were Canadian citizens while only his mother was residing in Kerala.
Besides this, Prathish also sent her a photo of another man living in a foreign country, telling that it was him. Following that, the woman gave his contact number to her father. He repeated the same lies to her father and made him believe the story. After gaining her trust through regular communication over phone, Prathish demanded Rs 2 lakh as loan from her for business needs in Indonesia. He also told her not to inform her family about the money as it would damage his reputation.
Prathish then spent the money to buy luxury items and expensive clothes. He reached the woman’s house in a luxury car hired using money borrowed from her. Following this, the woman’s family wanted to visit Prathish’s house to finalise their marriage. However, Prathish prevented it cunningly.
Later, Prathish borrowed Rs 6 lakh more from her citing different needs. As he didn’t contact the family afterwards, the woman’s family members went to Angamali looking for him to the address he had given. However, they realized that there was no one by that name in the area. When contacted, Prathish told them that since they were new to the area and most of the family members were abroad, none of the locals knew them personally.
Growing suspicious, the family members contacted the woman. The fraudulence came to light when she shared them the photos of Prathish that he had sent her. The family members filed a complaint, based on which police arrested Prathish.
