Locals come to know of woman's death after spotting son with coffin
Thiruvananthapuram: An ex-army officer was arrested over charges of allegedly murdering his mother. The deceased was identified as Poovar native Omana (70), retired teacher and wife of late Palayyan. Poovar police arrested her son Vipin Das (39) as part of the probe into the case. Police suspect that Omana succumbed to injuries on her neck and stomach.
Omana was found dead in mysterious circumstances on Thursday. The natives came to know about her death after spotting Vipin Das with a coffin. Vipin who was drunk also attempted to block the natives from entering the house. Later, he bathed his mother’s body and started digging a grave by himself.
Suspecting his behaviour, the natives informed Poovar police.
Vipin Das tried to block the police also when they rushed to his house. But police took a firm stand that the body must be taken for a COVID test before burial.
Later, police took the body to Thiruvananthapuram medical college and took Vipin Das into custody. The post-mortem report identified the mystery in the death.
“Beating marks were found on the neck and stomach of the deceased,” reported police.
The natives also informed the police that Vipin Das, who is a drunkard, used to beat his mother. Police also got information that the accused and his friends used to booze together at his house. Hence, police have been examining whether any others are involved in the murder.
Omana’s funeral was held in the presence of the police. Forensic experts also reached the spot and carried out an inspection.
Omana who was a teacher retired from Kamukinkod School. Vipin Das has been living with his mother after retiring from the army. He is a bachelor.
Omana has another son Chandra Das, an employee at the health department.
