Kochi woman brutally tortured over dowry, father also manhandled
Kochi: In yet another case of dowry harassment reported in Kerala, a woman named Diana was allegedly tortured by her husband and family here.
According to Diana, she has been constantly harassed and tortured by her husband Jipson and his family for not giving 50 sovereigns of gold as dowry. When she informed this issue to her father George, a native of Chakkaraparambu, he visited the house to enquire about the matter. Jipson thrashed George and left his leg broken. In the brutal attack, George’s ribs were also fractured.
The alleged incident happened on July 16. A day after this Diana approached Kochi North police but they ignored her complaint.
Diana entered wedlock with Jipson three months back. It is learned that both had a second marriage.
“Jipson’s mother used to torture me and even restricted me from having food. Once she kicked on my abdomen. One day she ousted me from the house for eating food at night when I was hungry. Jipson’s father used to regularly blame me for not bringing dowry as they expected. I communicated the issue to Jipson’s friend who is also a church priest named Fr. Nipin Kuriakose. But the priest advised me to forbear everything as it was a second marriage,” Diana detailed the ordeal she was undergoing.
Meanwhile, though Diana complained about the issue to the women’s commission on July 12, the officials replied that they will conduct a counselling session.
Diana also alleged that Jipson used to brutally torture his first wife.
