Kerala amends Gaming Act 1960, makes online rummy illegal
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has made online rummy illegal. An official notification regarding this was issued after amending Section 14 A of the Kerala Gaming Act 1960.
Earlier, the Kerala High Court had directed the government to take a suitable decision on bringing online gambling and online gaming under Kerala Gaming Act.
The court issued the order while considering the petition of director Poly Vadakkan. The petitioner approached the court seeking action against web portals that encourage online rummy and similar online gambling.
Considering the plea, the High Court served notices to cricketer Virat Kohli, actors Tamannah Bhatia and Aju Varghese for being the brand ambassadors of various online rummy portals.
A complaint against online rummy was filed in the court after many people faced financial loss and one committed suicide. As per the present act, police can take action against playing rummy using cards and by pledging cash.
But online rummy, which became popular recently, was not identified as illegal under this act. Observing this scope, online rummy mobile apps became more popular in the state.
With the amendment, police will be able to initiate action against these mobile apps as per complaints.
