Karuvatta bank robbery: Police nab key accused
Harippad: The Special Investigation team of police nabbed the key accused in the Karuvatta cooperative bank robbery case from Coimbatore. The accused was identified as Kattakkada native Albin Raj alias Shaiju (39). His arrest will be recorded on Saturday. Police took the accused to his residence at Kattakkada in the wee hours of Friday.
After taking him into custody, police recovered 400-gram gold ornaments which was kept inside a pit on the compound of his house.
The accused confessed to the police that he kept the jewellery robbed from the bank at his house in Kattakkada. After reaching his residence, he changed his statement and revealed that the rest of the jewellery was kept in Coimbatore.
Following this, the probe team moved to Coimbatore. After raiding the residence of the accused in Coimbatore, the probe team will record his arrest by Saturday evening.
According to police, they nabbed the accused forcefully as he tried to escape from the house.
Earlier, police have recovered the phone number of Albin Raj’s wife from Harippad native Shaibu, second accused in the case.
In October, the probe team reached Coimbatore after tracing his wife’s number and located the house. The police reached here after taking the second accused Shaibu and third accused Shibu into custody. But after this matter leaked, Albin Raj managed to escape from the police.
Though the arrest of two accused in the case was recorded, the team members of the probe team were camped in Coimbatore to nab the key accused in the case. According to the probe team, they nabbed Albin Raj after observing every movement.
Albin Raj and his team burgled Karuvatta Service Cooperative Bank in Haripad on August 31 and robbed gold and money worth Rs 2.87 cr.
