Kalyan Jewellers robbery case: Two more in custody
Coimbatore: Two more persons have been nabbed by Andhra Pradesh police in connection with the in Kalyan Jeweller’s ornaments robbery case. Chief conspirator Firoz’s brother Ahmed Salim and their mother Shama were taken into custody from Tirupati railway station.
It is learnt that Rs 60 lakh worth stolen ornaments were recovered from them. 26 diamonds out of stolen 267 were recovered from the duo.
The gang had robbed ornaments worth nearly Rs 1 crore. Since it was not safe to keep it at home, Ahmed Salim and Shama were on run with the ornaments as advised by Firoz.
It was on January 7, the cinema style robbery took place on the national highway near a petrol pump at K G Chavady in Coimbatore. Around 2 pm, Kalyan Jewellers’ car carrying - 3,107g gold ornaments, 243g gold covered diamonds and 243g silver ornaments - going from Thrissur to Coimbatore was hit by another car.
A gang of 10 persons came out of the second vehicle and forcefully pulled out the drivers before hijacking the car carrying the gold. The car was later found abandoned near Madhukkarai with no valuables.
Earlier, two involved in the robbery had surrendered in the court. Firoz was taken into custody by Andhra police. However, police couldn’t find any stolen ornaments from him.
Police under Tirupati DSP Ravishankar are interrogating Salim and Shama. Coimbatore police have gone to Tirupati to take them into custody.
