Kodungallur: Fisheries officials have seized a fishing boat for juvenile fishing at Azhikode coastal village in Thrissur district. The boat named Crystal, owned by E V Thambi hailing from Pallipuram, was charged with a hefty fine of Rs. 3.6 lakhs.
Officials led by the deputy director of fisheries seized three-and-half tonnes of 'threadfin bream' (Kilimeen) which are less than 10 centimetre in size. As per law, catching fishes less than 10 cm is illegal. Seized fishes were disposed in the outer sea.
It is illegal under the The Marine Fishing Regulation Act to fish 58 species below their legal size. Many complaints have been lodged recently on violation of this law.
The boat was illegally fishing in the sea after ignoring the weather warnings. Fisheries department officials said that a strict investigation will be carried out at sea in the coming days.
