Perumbavoor: Ganja weighing15 kg was seized from a couple which allegedly tried to smuggle the narcotic from Tamil Nadu on Friday, police said. The contraband in packets were kept inside a bag carried by the woman.
Nasar (31) and his second wife Athira (26) were arrested from Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district during a joint operation by the police and the district anti-narcotic special action force (DNAF).
Acting on a tip-off received by Ernakulam district rural police chief Karthik IPS, the police took the two into custody for carrying the ganja on a motorcycle from Tirupur in Tamil Nadu to Perumbavoor.
Police officers, split into several teams, were stationed along the stretch between Paliyekkara in Thrissur district and Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district. The officials nabbed the couple after a 24-hour long operation.
On interrogation, the accused, hailing from Kumaramangalam village at Thodupuzha in Idukki district, confessed to have been smuggling narcotics for the last six months, the police.
Nasar and Athira were allegedly part of a gang distributing the ganja in various parts of Kerala, they said, adding that probe was on to catch the gang.
