Human trafficking suspected at Munambam in Ernakulam; Police recover abandoned bags, ID cards
Kochi: Police suspect that a 43-member Sri Lankan group were illegally trafficked to foreign land from Munambam in Ernakulam. Bags found left at Maliankara jetty and the investigation based on that created suspicion about human trafficking in coastal areas.
Police found 8 bags abandoned at Maliankara boat jetty the other day. Cloths, medicines and 3 flight tickets were found in the bags. The details about human trafficking were revealed in a detailed investigation.
Earlier, a group of 43 people from Sri Lanka stayed in different resorts and lodges at Cherai. Among them, 40 reached Kochi on January 5 from Delhi by train and 3 came by flight on January 8. Police also found abandoned bags and identity cards from the resorts where they were put up.
Police have also learnt that a boat was sold from Munambam. It is suspected that the Sri Lankan natives might have crossed to foreign land via sea by boat. Earlier, there were reports about human trafficking from Munambam to Australia and New Zealand.
