Kochi: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Monday seized 4.640 kg heroin from Kochi International Airport. The substance was seized from a Tanzanian national Ashraf Mottoro Safi (32), who arrived from Dubai by an Emirates airline. The substance is worth Rs 28 crores in the international market. 

The heroin, in four packets, was hidden in a secret chamber of the trolly bag and was in the shape of Frankincense used in churches. The Tanzanian native was planning to board a train to Delhi after landing at the airport. 

The emigration officials grew suspicious on noticing his medical visa. The DRI officials also reached the airport after receiving a tip-off. The Emigration officials handed over Ashraf to DRO after the substance was seized from the baggage.  

The heroin is now sent for detailed examination. He will be produced in the court on Tuesday after further questioning. 

On June 19, Sharon Chigwasa, a Zimbabwe national, was also arrested for possessing 3 kg of contraband. He was arrested on his journey to Delhi via Bengaluru after landing in Kochi.
