Gold smuggling: DRI arrests customs superintendent of TVM airport
Thiruvananthapuram: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested customs superintendent of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in connection with the gold smuggling through the airport. B Radhakrishnan, customs superintendent was arrested for helping the smugglers. Accountant of the private firm which bought the gold from smugglers was also arrested.
Earlier, DRI had confirmed that a group of customs officials at the airport were involved in the gold smuggling.
During investigation, it was found that the smuggling occurred when the batch headed by Radhakrishnan was on duty. DRI started investigation as the smugglers effortlessly brought 25 kg of gold through the airport. Growing suspicious, the team interrogated Radhakrishnan and his mobile phone was also checked.
Radhakrishnan received information about the women who carried the gold in advance. DRI arrested him after confirming his involvement in the smuggling. Radhakrishnan was produced before the court and remanded.
Besides Radhakrishnan, the DRI also arrested Rahid, an accountant of a private firm in the city that bought gold from the smugglers. Hakkim, owner of the firm, is absconding along with Adv Biju, who is also involved in the case.
Investigation is on to find out whether more people were involved in the case.
