Gold smuggling: Did Sandeep, Swapna Suresh flee together?
Nedumangad: In the controversial diplomatic baggage gold smuggling case, customs suspect that the key accused Sarith and his partner in crime Sandeep, a native of Nedumangad, used Sandeep’s workshop as a hub for their illegal activities. The probe team also recovered evidence revealing that Sandeep was hand in glove with Swapna’s financial dealings.
After searching Swapna’s flat, the customs officials reached Sandeep’s residence around 10.30 pm on Tuesday and took his wife Sowmya into custody. At present, mobile phones of Sandeep and Swapna are switched off. Hence, it is suspected that the duo have escaped together.
The probe team said that the accused had earlier taken the smuggled gold from the airport to the workshop before taking to other places.
The residents close to the workshop also stated that vehicles were rarely taken for repair here. The workshop named ‘ Carbon Doctor’ only has the facility to clear the carbon from the engine of the car. During day time, only a lady employee is working here.
It is reported that Sandeep used to visit the workshop in luxury cars. Speaker Sreeramakrishnan, some public representatives and the accused Swapna Suresh were the only guests at the inauguration of the workshop. The workshop is functioning for the past one and half years.
Meanwhile, Sandeep’s mother-in-law Uma in her statement to customs revealed that Sandeep does not visit her house and she has no contact with her daughter Sowmya.
Sandeep is engaged in automobile business. He went into hiding when the inauguration of a new showroom at Ranni was scheduled.
A minister was also invited to inaugurate the showroom. Sandeep owns 11 vehicle showrooms across Kerala apart from the workshop in Nedumangad.
The municipal authority informed that Sandeep’s workshop in Nedumangad is functioning without a license and ownership certificate.
