Gold smuggling case: Sandeep Nair records confidential statement in court
Kochi: In the diplomatic baggage gold smuggling case, Sandeep Nair, the fourth accused, has recorded his confidential statement at the Aluva Magistrate court on Tuesday. The statement recording commenced at 2.30 pm on Tuesday and continued past 9.30 pm.
On the other day, Sandeep had expressed willingness to turn approver in the case and record his confession statement before the court. Hence, legal formalities related to it were explained to him. The NIA had given him a day's time to take a decision. But as he did not change his stance on turning approver, he was taken to record the statement before the magistrate.
It is reported that visuals of his confession before the magistrate was also recorded.
Sandeep’s statement will be crucial in the case as the NIA special court will consider the bail plea of other accused on Wednesday.
The magistrate will hand over Sandeep’s confidential statement in a sealed cover to NIA court.
The legal experts opined that Sandeep’s statement will affect other accused in the case.
They pointed out that his statements will help to collect more evidence in the case which was registered under UAPA act.
Sandeep made the unexpected move to turn approver in the case when other accused started to file their bail plea after completing 80 days in custody.
