Gold smuggling: Arrest of Rameez leads to more clues; Swapna fled via Perinthalmanna?
Kochi: The arrest of Malappuram Perinthalmanna Vettathoor native Rameez was a turning point in the gold smuggling case, it is learnt. Rameez is a major link in the gold smuggling chain. He was taken into custody from his house in the wee hours of Sunday and was taken to the Customs office in Kochi for interrogation.
The Customs officials hinted that Rameez's statement is crucial in the case and more people are likely to get arrested based on his statement. It is learnt that Rameez is a major partner who distribute the gold smuggled to Kerala. He has also invested in the smuggling.
The local residents in Vettathoor stated that Rameez has no connection with his family. Meanwhile, they also alleged that Rameez is a relative of MP and Muslim League leader P K Kunhalikutty. However, the personal staff of Kunhalikutty denied the allegations.
According to reports, Rameez was earlier arrested in connection with gold smuggling case and deer hunting in 2014. Also he has connection with hawala deals and gold smugglers, it is learnt. The officials expect that the smuggling gangs in Malappuram and Kozhikode districts can be identified with the help of Rameez.
Meanwhile, Swapna Suresh is suspected to have visited Perinthalmanna before going to Bengaluru. Swapna and Sandeep Nair were arrested from Bengaluru and are being taken to Kochi. They will be interrogated along with Rameez for getting clues on the case.
